Alert - Local Option Food and Beverage Tax Gets Second Reading (Posted 01/18/04)

HB 1008, a bill that would allow any city, town, or county to impose a local food and beverage tax.

The bill would allow a city or town to impose a new tax in addition to any existing food and beverage taxes at the county level, thus creating two separate taxes, one for the county and one for the municipality. It would also allow the money to be used for literally any purpose – it would not have to be dedicated to a purpose, such as tourism or convention promotion, that would bring new customers to the restaurants collecting the tax.

  1. Contact the following key members of the House Ways and Means Committee. Ask them to vote NO on HB 1008. Let them know how detrimental the passing of this bill would be to restaurants and the customers they serve:

    William Crawford, Chairman,
    H98@in.gov, 317-232-9816
    Terri Austin,
    H36@in.gov, 317-232-9751
    William C. Cochran,
    H72@in.gov, 317-232-9806
    Jeff Espich,
    H82@in.gov, 317-232-9651
    Sheila Klinker,
    H27@in.gov, 317-232-9644
    Carolene Mays,
    H94@in.gov, 317-232-9728
    David Orentlicher,
    H86@in.gov, 317-232-9818
    Eric Turner,
    H32@in.gov, 317-232-9750

  2. Contact your own representative and ask them to vote NO on HB 1008.
